PORTRAIT FUSIN
PORTRAIT PASTAIL
PORTRE
The art of the portrait is one of the most difficult field which the professional artist has to deal with. It requires a great skill of the face and the head lines drawing. But, above of all, the success is linked to its likeness to the model. It doesn't imply only to render perfectly the face lines but to catch his character either ; this means "to fathom the spirit of the model" as Ingrès was used to advise to his students...

We shall not stop investigating,
But in the term of our exploration,
We’ll reach back the place we had left,
and we shall discover it for the first time.
The painting naturally imposed upon me from my youth by watching my grandmother. Primary school teacher, she were used to prepare our grammar course with an extreme accuracy by realizing watercolor representing a bus, a cock, an owl with which she decorated the circumference of the walls of our class, to emphasize some grammatical features during our very long French grammar course. When I was a child I carefully looked for hours at her perfect drawings deserving of lithography and I dreamed to reach this perfection.
Nevertheless, once graduated, I did not choose to follow the classic path of the Fine Arts School, but preferred to work in self-taught. I perfect my drawing by the study of such rich themes as the portrait and the nude because of their formative role (purity of stroke and line, composition, color), then by the observation of animals in their housing environment and their attitudes which reveal of the character of the individual as the species. This is the ambivalence from the feelings and from the postures that I look for and try to reveal in my paintings.
In 1995, I discovered the pastel and was very fast amazed and conquered by its potential.
In 1999, my artistic world evolves towards the classicism art, with its complex rules, its symbolism, its rigorous but so natural compositions and the rigor of the studies of character types. While travelling, I fathom out my drawing and my painting by studying the works of the Great Masters and draw my information and my inspiration from the History, in cooperation with the mythology which shaped it to its most profound unconscious. I had for models the works of Hans Memling, Jan Van Eyck, Velázquez, Caravaggio, Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt, Veronese, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michel-Ange, Raphael, Rubens, Eugene Delacroix, etc. They constitute a literary and symbolic, biblical or historic inspiration which gives classic art his character. For me, their allegorical figures were the way which the humanity had to exorcise its fancies, its passions, to express its concerns, its fears, its convictions, its deepest feelings, applying itself to let the present and future generations know that she existed and in which conditions she lived.
I endeavored to include their complexity and to share it with my paintings. This is the mixture of classic aesthetic combined with my vision of present-day man that I try to return in a unique style of drawing through my paintings. My creatures, characters and settings gather in themselves elements stemming from millenniums of fears and from human aspiration. They are the repercussions of our qualities and our defects.
